Appraisal fair set for Aug. 14

DURHAM -- The Durham Regent retirement community, 3007 Pickett Road, will host its second annual Regent Relics Road Show appraisal fair from 2-5 p.m. Aug. 14.

Proceeds will benefit back to school supplies for needy children and the Shriners' Circus for Children.

Professional appraisers will be on site for the event. Your first three items may be appraised for a donation of $15 each. There will be a $10 fee for each appraisals after the third item. The first 25 participants will receive a certificate for three appraisals for $40. Anyone who has three or more items to be appraised, may purchase the certificate in advance.

The public is invited. The event will include refreshments and live entertainment and everyone is welcome to register for door prize drawings.

Sport Club meets today

DURHAM -- The Durham Sports Club will meet at noon today at Croasdaile Country Club, 3800 Farm Gate Ave.

The public is invited. The only cost is $20 for lunch.

Today's guest speaker will be N.C. Central University Athletic Director Ingrid Wicker-McCree. She will likely address NCCU's official move last week to NCAA Division I status as a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Lawyers' PAC backs candidate

DURHAM -- The North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys has endorsed Michael O'Foghludha, managing partner of the Durham law firm of Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer, for one of three available seats for Superior Court Judge in Durham County in the Nov. 2 election.

"The NCAWA is a state-wide organization that conducts a thorough and careful investigation of each of the candidate's qualifications and merits. It is quite an honor to obtain their endorsement", said Mr. O'Foghludha.

The NCAWA Judicial Endorsements Committee is a registered political action committee which makes non-partisan endorsements and campaign contributions in judicial elections.

Lottery winner sold in Durham

RALEIGH -- Someone, quite possibly someone from Durham, is $200,000 richer today.

Problem is, it's unclear who that someone is.

Among the winning tickets in Saturday's Power Ball drawing was one worth $200,000 and sold at the Fast Food No. 3 store at 2106 Broad Street.

The ticket matched all five white balls but not the Power Ball.

Social Services board to meet

DURHAM -- The Durham County Board of Social Services will hold its monthly meeting on July 21 at 9 a.m.

The board will meet at the Durham County Department of Social Services Building, 200 E. Main St., conference room 609-left.

Construction begins Monday

DURHAM --New sidewalk construction will begin Monday on Hillandale Road between Cammie and Peppertree streets.

The project will begin on the east side of Hillandale Road at Peppertree Street and is expected to take up to three months to complete, ending at Cammie Street. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be maintained throughout the project, but minor motorist delays should be expected. Residents and businesses in the area are being notified of the upcoming project with door hangers.

The Hillandale Road project is part of the overall 2010 Sidewalk Construction and Repairs Project (SW-25) that kicked off in May. The project consists of repairs and installation of sidewalks and curb-cut ramps to portions of Dearborn Drive, Hillandale Road, Hillsborough Road, Markham Avenue, Hope Valley Road, Washington Street, and University Drive.

YWCA seeks nominations

RALEIGH -- The YWCA of the Greater Triangle invites nominations for its 28th annual class of the Academy of Women, which recognizes outstanding area women who are committed to improving the social and economic conditions that impact girls, women and their families in our community.

The nomination deadline is noon Aug. 2.

The Academy of Women is an honor given to remarkable women who excel in their fields while maintaining a strident commitment to achieve the YWCA mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.

Nominations for the award may be submitted by individuals, businesses, and community or civic organizations. Each individual or group may submit one nomination in each of 12 categories.
