Luvenia T. Elliott

DURHAM -- Luvenia T. Elliott 85, departed her life on September 1, 2010.

She is survived by three daughters, eight sons and a host of grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 6, 2010 at 2 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church in Durham, N.C. with visitation at 1 p.m.

DURHAM -- Funeral Services for Mr. Clyde Moore, Jr., 83, of 100 Spring Valley Lane, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at White Rock Baptist Church, 3400 Fayetteville Street.

Burial will be at Beechwood Cemetery. Family visitation tonight from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the church. Masonic rites at 6:30.

He was born April 24, 1927 in Beauford County, North Carolina. He graduated from P.S. Jones High School in Washington, NC in 1945.

He began his professional career in 1947 at Radio Electric Appliance and Repair in Durham as a janitor and worked his way up to manager. He then joined Linthicum TV & Radio Service in Durham for approximately 13 years.

He joined the Communications Department at North Carolina Central University in 1966 where he retired in 1993 after 27 years of service. While at NCCU Clyde served as an electronics technician in the Learning Resources Center where he managed and maintained all of the University's audio visual equipment.

He also taught media/videography classes for students enrolled in the Mass Communications program.

Clyde was a man of great faith who trusted God in every situation. He was a long time member of White Rock Baptist Church where he served for over 50 years in several capacities including, Deacon, Trustee, Usher and member of the Finance and Budget Committees. He also served as the financial secretary for years.

He was a member of the Sarah E. Smith Sheepfold and the former Moore-Kennedy Sunday School Class. Given his interest and expertise in technology, he also managed and operated the sound system at White Rock for approximately 40 years during Sunday worship services, funerals, anniversary celebrations and many other events held at the church.

While Clyde spent many countless hours working around White Rock he found time to lend his service and support to organizations in the Durham community. He was an active and committed member of the Durham Interdenominational Ushers Union where he served as president for more than 30 years. He also served as treasurer for the Advisory Board of the Durham Ushers Union. His commitment extended to the state level of the Ushers Union where he served as treasurer and chairperson for the Finance Committee for the Interdenominational Ushers Association of NC, Inc. (IUA). He worked tirelessly with the state team in charge of oversight and construction of the IUA Headquarters Building in Franklinton, NC which was dedicated on August 30, 2003. He was also a member of the Association of Retired NCCU Personnel, President of the Friendly Forty Club and the Rosewood Street Community Club.

He was an avid supporter of several Masonic organizations and was a member of Doric Lodge #28, Durham Consistory #218 and Zafa Temple #176. He served as instructor in the Lodge and Consistory organizations for many years teaching hundreds of new brothers the rules and principles of the Lodge.

Survivors include his son, Clyde Moore, III and his wife, Patricia; two nieces that he and Louise raised after the death of their father (Roy) and mother (Ida), Vivian Trice Holliday and her husband Shelly of Greenville, S.C. and Rosalyn Trice of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Sarah M. Felton and Jean M. Sims of Elizabeth City, NC; two sister-in-laws, Minerva Fields and Winfried Headen (Theadore); four grand children, Kellie Moore Streat and her husband Geoffrey of Atlanta, Ga., Corey Moore, Casey Moore and, Tristan Holliday of Greenville, S.C.; one great grandchild, Yasmine Holliday and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

G. Benny Wagoner



GRAHAM -- Mr. G. Benny Wagoner, 85, of Graham died at the Hospice Home on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 10:25 p.m.

A native of Person County, he was the husband of the late Helen Pass Lynch Wagoner and the son of Elliott Wagoner and Patsy Mae Wheeler Wagoner, both deceased. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Wagoner was a retired Captain of the Burlington Fire Department. He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and usher and was a member of the Believers' Sunday School Class and the Senior Saints.

Survivors include a step-daughter, Mrs. Frances L. Bailey of Burlington; four step-sons, Mr. Michael Lynch and Mr. Jimmy Lynch, both of Graham and Mr. Danny Lynch and Mr. Larry Lynch, both of Burlington; one sister, Mrs. Frances Satterfield of Charlotte; 10 step-grandchildren; and 17 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mr. Percy Curtis Wagoner, Mr. Billy Dean Wagoner and Mr. Lambreth Alton Wagoner; and one sister, Mrs. Hazel Brown.

The funeral service will be conducted at Riverside Baptist Church on Monday, September 6, 2010 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Bob Stephenson and the Rev. Curtis Oakley. Burial will follow at Graham Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory in Graham on Sunday from 2 until 4 p.m.

The family request that retired fireman of the Burlington Fire Department serve as honorary pallbearers.

Louise Lawrence Riggsbee

PITTSBORO -- Mrs. Louise Lawrence Riggsbee, 94, died September 3, 2010 at her residence.

Born in Wake County on September 5, 1915, Mrs. Riggsbee was a daughter of Cicero and Nonie Lawrence. She was employed by Odell Mfg. for 45 years, retiring at age 70 due to the mill being closed down. Mrs. Riggsbee enjoyed cooking pies and cakes for those that were shut in; she also enjoyed transporting the "old people" on their errands to various appointments or other places. Mrs. Riggsbee was a member of Bynum United Methodist Church where she had served as president of the UMW.

Mrs. Riggsbee is survived by her daughters, Cornelia "Neil" Elmore of Pittsboro and Sue Starnes of Durham; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two nieces.

The service celebrating Mrs. Riggsbee's life will be conducted by Pastors Gina Barrow, Ray Gooch, and Robert Elmore at 11 a.m. Monday at Bynum United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro and at other times at the home of Cornelia and Robert Elmore.

cedar grove -- Lynette Barker Deaton, born October 3, 1933, went to be with her Lord an Saviour on September 3, 2010 in her home in Cedar Grove from natural causes. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law; two granddaughters; and a grandson-in-law; and family friends, Randy and Joy Harris, for whom we are forever grateful. She will be celebrated in a private, family ceremony. Her family appreciates the outpouring of sympathy and love.

Shirley Friedlander Weiss





chapel hill -- Shirley Friedlander Weiss, a member of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill faculty for more than 35 years and generous supporter of numerous campus programs as well as national arts, music and science organizations, died Tuesday, August 31, at Carol Woods Retirement Community. She was 89.

Professor Emerita Shirley F. Weiss was one of the first women faculty members at UNC Chapel Hill and a leading scholar in the field of urban planning. She was awarded the Distinguished Alumna Award from UNC Chapel Hill in 2003.

After receiving her bachelor's degree in Economics from the New Jersey College for Women at Rutgers University in 1942, Weiss went on to complete her Master of Regional Planning degree from the Department of City and Regional Planning (DCRP) at Chapel Hill in 1958. Shirley Weiss became DCRP's first female faculty member and was promoted to full Professor after receiving her Ph.D. from Duke University in economics in 1973. Weiss, a pioneer in urban research, served as Associate Research Director of the Center for Urban and Regional Studies. She was also Acting Director of Women's Studies. Before coming to UNC-CH, Weiss worked with the Maryland State Planning Commission and with planning consultants Harrison, Ballard and Allen in NYC.

Shirley Friedlander Weiss was born February 26, 1921, the second daughter of Max and Vera Friedlander, New York City. She married Charles M. Weiss on June 7, 1942 and they spent the next 68 years engaged in scholarship, teaching and traveling the world. They enjoyed and supported a range of musical, artistic and science endeavors and created an interdisciplinary fellowship program, the Weiss Urban Livability Program which has supported more than 150 graduate students at UNC-CH.

Together with her husband, Shirley and Charles Weiss provided generous support to over a dozen programs at UNC Chapel Hill, including the Graduate School Weiss Urban Livability Fellowship Program, the Departments of City and Regional Planning, Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Music and Art, the Carolina Performing Arts Program, the University Library, the Ackland Art Museum, WUNC-FM, the Botanical Gardens, the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, and Student Financial Aid, among others.

Shirley Weiss is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Charles M. Weiss; and many friends and colleagues in Chapel Hill.

A memorial service has been planned for Saturday, September 25th at 2 p.m. at the Carol Woods Retirement Community Assembly Hall. A reception will follow.

Edward Lee Gallimore Bryan

DURHAM -- Lieutenant Commander Edward Lee Bryan, USN, retired, passed away on August 31, 2010.

A US Naval Academy graduate in '59, Lee spent six years serving in the Submarine division. After retiring from the Navy, Lee moved into the private sector. Lee was the epitome of entrepreneurship and philanthropy- stewarding his services towards helping others. He developed several companies and worked with both Duke and UNC to help develop the advancement of medical technology.

Lee is survived by a brother, Bill Bryan of Cincinnati; a sister, JoEllen Premru of Connecticut; Susan, his wife of 47 years; and four children, Kevin, Chris, Keith and Cathie. He has six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

The family has requested all donations to be made to help fund the great Hospice service that he received in lieu of flowers. Donations can be sent to: Heartland Memorial Fund, 333 North Summit Street, Toledo, Ohio 43604.

Charles Eugene Womack

DURHAM -- Mr. Charles Eugene Womack, 88, of 426 Southerland Street, died on Wednesday, September 1, 2010.

Mr. Womack was a native of Polk County, the son of Amos Anderson Womack and Lela White Womack. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and World War II. He retired from Southern Railroad after 30 years as an engineer. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Clyde, Knox, Amos and Lewis Womack; and two sisters, Pearl Johnson and Edna Uhrig.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy G. Womack; daughter, Mary Beth Parker and husband, Jim of Emerald Isle; and three grandchildren, Seth Parker, Caleb Parker and Shane Parker.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Angier Avenue Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Clarence Parrish and the Rev. Kevin Byers. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Shirley Wimer Schnetzler

pittsboro -- Shirley Wimer Schnetzler 84, died Monday August 30, at home in Pittsboro, after a brief illness.

She was born on December 24, 1925 in Cortland, N.Y. to William and Edna Wimer. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great aunt and friend. Her home was always filled with hospitality and love.

After graduating from Cortland High School, Shirley worked at the Crescent Corset Company and later in life at the Corning Glass Works.

Most of her life was dedicated to being a homemaker, wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother.

She married William Paul Schnetzler in Cortland, N.Y. on August 20, 1949 to whom she recently celebrated her 61st wedding anniversary.

They resided in Cortland N.Y., White Plains, N.Y., Groton, N.Y., Corning N.Y., Franklin, and most recently have spent their last 20 years of retirement in Pittsboro.

Shirley was active in her family and friends lives.

She is survived by her husband, William Paul Schnetzler, of Pittsboro; her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Robert Franklin; her sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Linda Schnetzler of Corning, N.Y. and Bill and Daniela Schnetzler of Mount Airy, Maryland; as well as eight grand-children, Eric Adams of Wake Forest, Stephen and Ashley Schnetzler of Elyria, Ohio, Mathew and Amy Franklin, of Winston Salem, Lisa Ellison, of Corning N.Y., and Will and Jen Schnetzler of Mount Airy, Md. She is also survived of three great grandchildren Bryon, Dylan, and Brielle; and many nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews. She was pre-deceased by 12 brothers and sisters.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held in Berkley Springs, W.Va. at a later date.

HILLSBOROUGH -- Angela Torian Kithcart was born March 12, 1966. She died September 1, 2010 in her home.

The funeral will be Sunday 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion AME Church. Burial will be in Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday 1 p.m. at the church.

Alexandra Mary Goehl



MORRISVILLE --Ms. Alexandra Mary Goehl, 39, of 112 Holly Creek Road, Morrisville, died Tuesday in UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill after months of declining health.

Ms. Goehl was born on 21 August 1971 in Bogota, Columbia, adopted at three years old by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Goehl. Ms. Goehl was a proud graduate of East Carolina University (ECU). As an ECU graduate, she had a lifelong spirited and healthy rivalry with her brother, a graduate of North Carolina State University. Ms. Goehl was a loving person, a caregiver by nature, and, as such, she was pursuing paramedic training. She also was an active supporter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Father Thomas Doheny will celebrate a Liturgy of Christian Burial at noon on Saturday, 4 September 2010 at Holy Infant Catholic Church. The visitation will take place at the church for one hour prior to the liturgy. Burial will be in Brier Creek Memorial Gardens.

Ms. Goehl is survived by her father, Thomas Goehl; step-mother, Marilyn Goehl; brother, Eric Goehl; sister-in-law, Kelly Goehl; step-sister, Kimberly Gutierrez; grandfather, Art Fortier; grandmother, Catherine Goehl; as well as numerous other loving relatives. She was preceded in death by her mother, Judith Goehl.

Flowers are accepted; memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

She was a retired LPN from UNC Hospitals and a member of First Calvary Baptist Church.

Sue Knott

DURHAM — Mrs. Sue Knott, 60, passed away in her home on Monday, August 31, 2010.

Mrs. Knott was born in Durham County, the daughter of Marie Allen Ellis and the late Tracy Ellis. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. Mrs. Knott was preceded in death by her sister, Gay Turner; her brother, Tracy “Boy” Ellis; and her granddaughter, Ariel Michelle.

Mrs. Knott is survived by her husband of 43 years, William “Skeeter” Knott; her daughter, April Knott Milko and husband, Chris, and their children, Hayle and Cody; her daughter, Misty Knott Lyon and husband, William, and their children, Kaitlyn and Will; her daughter, Nikki Knott and husband, Todd Crabtree, and their children, Jayce, Logan, Chloe, Cade, and Holden; and three brothers; and one sister; along with numerous extended family members.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel, 1105 Broad St, Durham, by Chaplain Tom Hehenberger.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.

BAHAMA — Claude Conway Mack, age 99, departed this life at Duke University Medical Center on Monday, August 30, 2010 after an extended illness.

He was born October 14, 1910 to the late John Wesley Mack and Grace Wilson Mack.

He is survived by his daughter, Gayle Mack.; three sisters, Pearl Holman, Ruth Pridgen and Juanita Shaw; one brother, Russell Mack; and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 3, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Bahama.

Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Joseph Edward King



BUTNER — Mr. Joseph Edward King, 56, of 1052 King Drive, Butner, died at his home on Wednesday, September 1, 2010.

Mr. King was a native and lifelong resident of Durham, the son of the late James Theodore and Margaret Reaves King. He was the owner of Budd Piper Roofing Company. He was a member of the Old Fashion Tabernacle. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela King; son, Brad King of Butner; daughter, Teresa King Bozzano of Holly Springs; two sisters, Magdalene Gallant and Judy Wrenn, both of Roxboro; and three grandchildren, Christopher Bozzano, Gabriella Bozzano and Catherine Bozzano.

A celebration of his life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday with visitation following until 1 p.m.

DURHAM — Funeral services for Mrs. Olean Harris Davis, 89, will be held at Noon Friday at First Calvary Baptist Church, 1311 Morehead Avenue.

Family visitation, one hour prior to service.

She was a retired LPN from UNC Hospitals and a member of First Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Clarence Davis, Jr. (Hilda) and Robert Clark (Beauica); a granddaughter, Candice Morciglio; grandsons, Christopher Barnes, Darrice Daye and Robert Clark, IV; one great-grandchild, Robert Clark, V.

Viewing, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Fisher Funeral Parlor.

The Rev. George Rowland Walls



DURHAM — Funeral services for the Rev. George Rowland Walls, 61, of 3007 Cedarwood Drive, will be held at 1 p.m. at White Rock Baptist Church, 3400 Fayetteville St. Family visitation, 1 hour prior to service.

Rev. Walls was a retired pastor of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Chatham County, and an accomplished Gospel singer..

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Floretta Liverpool Walls; four children, Erick D. Walls (Sakeenah), Carletha R. Walls, Alicia Richmond (Monroe) and Christopher Walls; 8 grandchildren; two brothers, Rev. Nathaniel E. Wall (Ernestine) and Lonnie Baldwin (Lois); two sisters-in-law, Wilma Liverpool and Bobbye L. Simmons.

Rev. Walls will lie in state from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 530 Lystra Road, Chapel Hill.

Viewing, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday at Fisher Funeral Parlor.

Joyce Harrell Hodge

SMITHFIELD - Joyce Harrell Hodge, 81, a recent resident of the Landing in Wilson, died Monday, August 30, at Wilson Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Born in Edenton, she was the daughter of James Louis and Eva Tynch Harrell. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ray K. Hodge; and three children, Joy Blashaw and husband, Mark of Raleigh, Ben Hodge and wife, Kate Winstead Hodge of Winston-Salem, and Donna Ariosa of Raleigh. Her six grandchildren are Jamieson and Madi Blashaw, John and Eleanor Hodge, and Steven and Jennifer Ariosa. She also is survived by a sister, Carolyn Layden of Goldsboro; and a brother, James Louis Harrell Jr., of Edenton.

Joyce was a graduate of John A. Holmes High school in Edenton, Mars Hill and Meredith Colleges, and did additional study at East Carolina University. She taught public school music in Rocky Mount and Youngsville, and for many years taught private piano lessons. After retirement she was a member of the Smithfield First Baptist Church where she was active as a Sunday School class member and Dorcas class president and she participated in several musical activities and outreach programs of her mission group. As a helpmate with her pastor husband her life was filled with participation in choirs and musical leadership, piano accompaniment, and teaching of children in Sunday School.

A memorial service for Joyce will be conducted by pastor Lee Colbert at Smithfield First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Thursday. There will be a family visitation at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma today from 7 to 9 p.m. A private interment will be at the Kenly Cemetery prior to the memorial service.
